Sindhi vs Marathi vs Bengali vs Nepali (Indo-Aryan Languages)

Can Sindhi, Marathi, Bengali, and Nepali speakers understand each other and Indo-Aryan languages? In this episode we showcase some of the similarities and test the degree of mutual intelligibility between Sindhi, Marathi, Bengali, and Nepali. Instead of a list of words and sentences, Chinmayee (Marathi speaker), Lahari (Bengali speaker), Haren (Sindhi speaker), and Achyut (Nepali Speaker) will each read statements/paragraphs in their respective languages to see how well they can understand one another.

Bengali / Bangla (বাংলা) is an Indo-Aryan language and the official and most widely spoken language of Bangladesh and second most widely spoken of the 22 scheduled languages of India, behind Hindi. Within India, Bengali is the official language of the states of West Bengal, Tripura and the Barak Valley in the state of Assam. It is also spoken in different parts of the Brahmaputra valley of Assam. It is also the most widely spoken language in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, and is spoken by significant minorities in other states including Jharkhand, Bihar, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Odisha. Bengali has a long literary tradition with the earliest work being the Charyapada, a collection of Buddhist mystic songs in Old Bengali. In later stages, Medieval Bengali literature consists of numerous varieties, including Hindu and Islamic works, such as the Mangalkavya, the works of Syed Sultan and Abdul Hakim, the Vaishnava texts, and several others. Throughout history there have been many amazing Bengali poets, including Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore (রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর), Kazi Nazrul Islam (কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম), notable for his activism who is now recognized as the National poet of Bangladesh, Jibanananda Das, Nirmalendu Goon, Sukanta Bhattacharya (সুকান্ত ভট্টাচার্য), Sunil Gangopadhyay, Shakti Chattopadhyay, Shamsur Rahman (শামসুর রাহমান), Dwijendralal Ray, Helal Hafiz (হেলাল হাফিজ), and endless others.

Marathi (मराठी) is the third largest language in India after Hindi and Bengali, it is an Indo-Aryan language spoken predominantly by Marathi people of Maharashtra, India. It is the official language and co-official language in the Maharashtra and Goa states of Western India, respectively, and is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India.

Nepali (नेपाली) is an Indo-Aryan language and the official language of Nepal, and the Indian state of Sikkim and in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration of West Bengal. The language is native to the Himalayas region of South Asia and also spoken by a significant number of people in Bhutan, and the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Uttarakhand, in addition to the Burmese Gurkhas in Myanmar.

Sindhi (سِنڌِي‎ / सिन्धी) is primarily spoken in the Pakistani province of Sindh, and in India.
