Coron in 2012 & 2025: Featuring its sunsets, fireflies, and box jellyfish

Coron in northern Palawan, the western-most province of the Philippines, used to evoke a sense of wild frontier land, an unknown territory that occupies a beguiling space both in the physical world and in our imaginations.

We went here in 2012 on a whim because of a group discount (which turned out to be a dud); nevertheless, its beauty had captured us. So we promised to be back and back we went this year.

Once more, we are doing a before-and-after episode of another place that we have visited in the past and have come back to. It's always fascinating to compare our experience and memories of a place so many years apart.

This time around, we knew more of what to expect and planned for more activities. But we also went back to two of the places we visited in the past: Mt. Tapyas and the Kingfisher Park.

Mt. Tapyas is arguably the most popular land site in Coron, with visitors climbing at all hours of the day but especially during late afternoons because of its spectacular views of the sunsets.

The Kingfisher Park, a privately-owned nature reserve, on the other hand, is also arguably the least known popular destination of Coron. It's not an oxymoron. It has many visitors but many tourists are still unaware of its existence.

This is Part 1 of our Palawan trip. Part 2 will feature Dariel's first-ever experience of wreck diving, my intro dive, our boat tour, and our visit to Melb's Cashew Factory, a product that is primarily associated with Palawan.
