Our ex-RAN Grumman Tracker was the star of a vintage aircraft parade Sunday up the Illawarra Coast to Stanwell Park Beach to mark the world's first heavier-than-air flight 129 years ago. Flying aboard our Vietnam War-era de Havilland Caribou, HARS volunteer
Photographer Howard Mitchell and videographer Tim May caught these amazing close-up images of this one-time aircraft carrier-based surveillance aircraft piloted by veteran Gary Criddle and young Alex Le Merton. An even older DC-3 led the parade.
Our video begins with an early morning crew briefing and the story of how a local scientist, historian and inventor named Sir Lawrence Hargrave proved heavier-than-air flight with box kites 50 kms north of our Museum back in 1894, a technology the Wright Brothers used for their first flight 10 years later in the US, the event's recent reenactment and the flight up over the beach and neighboring Bald Hill.
Every year, HARS celebrates that historic event with a Kite Day Fly-past of its own historic aircraft. For years, Lawrence featured on Australia's $20 note and an upstairs exhibition at HARS commemorates his pioneering work next to the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame.
