Can Ruta Lee outdraw and outsmart the U.S. MARSHAL? Find out in this Full Episode of the Classic modern western directed by Robert Altman (MASH, NASHVILLE). In this special episode, REST IN PEACE, from June 6, 1959, actress Ruta Lee shows her versatility by being the leader of a ruthless gang. And…top director Robert Altman, though still relatively unknown, helmed the episode, which was pretty violent stuff for its time.
Long before Sheriff Walt Longmire debuted in print and film, another modern-day lawman, Sheriff Frank Morgan of Cochise County, AZ, was tracking down and arresting bad guys in the contemporary American West. John Bromfield starred as Sheriff Frank Morgan in the syndicated hit, SHERIFF OF COCHISE. On-location settings in AZ helped give the series a realistic quality lacking in most of the LA basted crime shows.
After two years of starring in the series, SHERIFF OF COCHISE, Bromfield’s character was given a promotion and the series a name change. He became a UNITED STATES MARSHAL and was joined by deputy James Griffith. The series continued for another successful two years. B-movie leading man Bromfield had had a middling career starring in feature films like CURUCU, BEAST OF THE AMAZON and Universal’s 3rd CREATURE sequel, REVENGE OF THE CREATURE.
In his move to television, John Bromfield found an action role that suited his strong physic and, due to the show’s success, became wealthy. So, after 4 years what did Bromfield do? He reinvented himself and happily became a commercial fisherman in Southern CA.
Looking back at the series, an array of actors who would later gain fame appeared on the shows, including Michael Landon, Robert Fuller, Jacqueline Scott, David Janssen, Lee Van Cleef, Jack Lord, Jan Shepard and Mike Connors.
The opening credits changed with this series when the title changed. As THE SHERIFF OF COCHISE, the show opened with Sheriff Morgan walking down a dusty street wearing cowboy boots and a low-slung Western gun and holster. When it was retitled U.S. MARSHAL, the opening featured Bromfield as a modernized lawman wearing a shoulder holster and driving a Dodge wagon.
