The Schlitten is the predecessor of the modern Rodel. The most meaningful translation of Schlitten is Sleigh. That makes sense because the Schlitten is a stiff-framed sled compared to the flexible-framed (and more agile) Rodel. Think of the horse-drawn sleigh. They're stiff. The Davoser Schlitten in the video is making a comeback. It went out of production in Davos about 1960. The steamed bent-wood ash frame was being produced out of country, but were of lesser quality. Some old originals are even being offered on E-bay, but there's nothing like having and using the brand-new real sled. No plastic. They're steered by putting a foot on the snow. Right foot, right turn etc. That's why they are so slow compared to a Rodel. The flexible Rodel does NOT require feet to ever touch the snow except to stop. If you see someone on a Rodel steering with the feet...well...they don't know what they are doing. They may as well be using a Schlitten. This one is made by 3R in Sulgen, Switzerland. They broke records getting it to me (in the boonies of eastern Idaho) in just seven days at no extra cost.
The key word here is Classic, the way it was built many decades ago. It's strong and slow due to the old method of attaching the steels using screws exposed to the running surface. Originally, it was meant to be towed for hauling purposes. Speed was of no concern.
An assortment of lengths are available depending upon use, up to 130cm. (my Rodels fit me at only 115cm). You can carry a lot of cargo if necessary, that's how it all started.
3R offers a number of accessories including a toddler seat, cowbell, document bag/footrest and even a fluffy insulative bag for the aforementioned toddler. You do NOT have to pay a ridiculous base price of $600+ as shown on one USA website.
If sliding fast in total control is what you want, skip the Schlitten, buy a Sportrodel DIRECTLY from a Rodelbau in Europe. Skip the middleman mark up and have it shipped to your door, fully assembled.
