3300km Through the Eastern Cape | Storms River, Addo & Bedrogfontein 4x4 | Clueless Overlanders 4x4

In this episode, we take on a 3,300km journey across South Africa, starting in Johannesburg and heading all the way down to the Eastern Cape in our fully loaded Land Cruiser 200 Series.

What begins as a family holiday quickly turns into a long-awaited overlanding adventure.

We spend time in Knysna, collect the kids in Port Elizabeth, and enjoy slow mornings and unforgettable sunrises in Jeffreys Bay. After dropping the kids off again, the real adventure begins.

From there, we tick off a bucket-list destination — Storms River Mouth Rest Camp, managed by South African National Parks — where we experience a rare combination of a perfect sunset and sunrise from the same campsite, just metres from the ocean.

We explore what Storms River Mouth has to offer, including:

The suspension bridges

Boulder beaches

Scenic hikes

A thrilling boat cruise into the ocean and up the river gorge

Next, we head inland to Addo Elephant National Park, entering via the quieter Matyholweni Gate. Within minutes, we’re reminded whose park this really is during a tense (and slightly funny) close encounter with a bull elephant.

We set up camp at Addo’s main rest camp, share some practical campsite tips for overlanders, and join new friends for a convoy drive on the Bedrogfontein 4x4 Trail — a remote, scenic route linking the Kabouga and Darlington sections of the park. What follows is breathtaking scenery, long gravel roads, and a race against the clock to make the park gate before closing time.
