Trabajando el bongó en clases de baile del Son Cubano • Working the bongó at a dance class of Cuban Son
El Bongó is the main percussion instrument in the Cuban genre of El Son. It's constructed of two small drums with different roles and sounds. It originates in older styles of music such as Nengón, Kiribá and Changüí, but in these styles the drums were bigger, the tuning was lower and it was played with a different technique and approach.
This type of construction and way of playing was born and standardized after the invention of the martillo, created by Agustín Gutiérrez Brito, nicknamed "Manana". The martillo is the static pattern that binds all the communicative accents, phrases and floreos ("fills") together.
