The [hanse]Pfeyfferey has a unique specialization: improvised and rediscovered music from around the year 1500.
Since 2020, the ensemble has been active in and around Bremen and Magdeburg.
The set they recorded for our session is a shortened version of their program “Stadtpfeiferinnen – Serenade for Isabella.”
Serenade for Isabella delves into the Casanatense songbook, a wedding gift for Isabella d’Este.
This book was not only a wedding present but also served as a songbook for the Piffari.
The Piffari were Italian players of loud wind instruments, comparable to the Stadtpfeifer from the German-speaking regions.
Not only Flemish singers such as Guillaume Du Fay and Josquin des Prés found their way to the Italian courts —
many wind players from southern Germany were also brought to Italy for their exceptional craftsmanship.
These exchanges left behind a wealth of secular music — a repertoire that spread far beyond regional borders.T
