The first time I heard this hauntingly beautiful tune was possibly when I was in the cinema at the age of twelve watching the film of Far From The Madding Crowd (where it features movingly as an unaccompanied song while Sergeant Troy is planting bulbs around Fanny’s grave), but I probably wouldn’t have registered the music as I’d have been too preoccupied waiting for Julie Christie to reappear on screen (having fallen in love with her in Dr Zhivago when I was ten). The first time I definitely became aware of it was when I was learning the harp in my late 20s and discovered it in Sylvia Woods’ Teach Yourself The Folk Harp; it was the first piece I ever performed to anyone, so it has a very special place in my heart (quite apart from any subconscious associations with Julie Christie).
There are lots of different arrangements and performances of the of the tune, with varied harmonies and even with the melody slightly altered. It’s also known by different names, including (frequently) The Bold Grenadier and (less often) One Morning In May, but whatever you call it, its Aeolian mode feel never fails to beguile...
The sheet music for The Grenadier and the Lady is obtainable as usual from Creighton's Collection (https://www.creighton-griffiths.co.uk...) or from your regular harp music supplier.
