Indian Railways is the state-owned national railway system of India, managed by the Ministry of Railways. It operates one of the world's largest rail networks, with a total track length of 135,207km and route length of 69,181km as of 2024, making it the fourth largest in the world. Indian Railways runs more than 13,000 passenger trains every day connecting 7,325 stations across the country and carries over 6.9 billion passengers annually. The system also operates over 11,700 freight trains daily and transports around 1,588 million tonnes of goods per year.

Founded in 1951, Indian Railways was formed by nationalizing and merging 42 existing railway companies, and it was organized into six regional zones, which have since grown to 18 administrative zones subdivided into 68 operating divisions. It employs over 1.2 million people, making it India's second-largest employer and the ninth-largest in the world. The railway network integrates different gauges and has largely electrified its broad-gauge routes, with over 96% electrification as of August 2024.

Indian Railways is also pioneering green initiatives, aiming to become a net-zero carbon emission network by 2030, introducing solar-powered trains, rainwater harvesting, and sustainable lighting at stations. Recent modernization projects include expanding high-speed and semi-high-speed train services, redevelopment of stations, upgraded rolling stock, and new safety measures.

The network includes two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai and the Mountain Railways of India, which covers the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and Kalka Shimla Railway.
