Amid Beijing’s tariff war with Washington, Chinese President Xi Jinping has embarked on a Southeast Asia charm offensive. Xi met Vietnamese Communist Party chief To Lam in Hanoi on April 14, 2025, and attended the signing of dozens of bilateral agreements, including deals to improve supply chains and railway cooperation. Hours later, US President Donald Trump said China’s efforts to deepen economic ties with Vietnam was likely part of a plan to “screw” the US.
