Steam Ranger has a fabulous railway that extends from Mount Barker to Victor Harbour, some 82 kilometres or 51 miles. This former South Australian Railways branch line was built to 5 feet 3 inches Broad Gauge and once connected to the state capital of Adelaide.
Steam Ranger is a world class heritage tourist railway. It is a must see experience if you visit South Australia. The variety of scenery from the hills around Mount Barker to the coastal strip beyond Goolwa to Victor Harbour create an almost unique combination in the world of heritage tourist railways.
For over 40 years, Steam Ranger has developed the operating capacity to service a range of services. These services operate mainly from five stations along the line.
Steam Ranger operate steam and diesel locomotive hauled passenger trains as well as diesel rail car services.
This production captures steam locomotive 621, a member of the ten strong 620 Class locomotives built between 1936 and 1938. The class were built for fast light passenger train haulage including operations on lightly laid branch lines. The wheel arrangement is a Pacific type, 4-6-2.
This particular service operated from Mount Barker to the coastal town of Goolwa and return. The distance between these two stations is approximately 64 kilometres or about 39 miles.
Any element of the Steam Ranger operation is worth visiting and travelling on one of their various services.
