In 1992, Hurricane Andrew smashed into Florida, causing $30 billion in damage; 43 U.S. deaths were blamed on the storm.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most destructive natural disasters in our country's history.
On this date in 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Southern Florida as a Category 5 storm.
Andrew carried maximum winds of 165 miles per hour as it raged over the state. After it was over, residents emerged to scenes of total devastation.
The storm damaged or destroyed 155 thousand homes.
Hurricane Andrew was only five Category 5 hurricanes to make landfall in the United States.
