Hidden deep in the silent, windswept valley of Hanle in Ladakh stands a 400-year-old monastery with a secret past. What many see today as a serene spiritual centre was once the royal palace of Ladakh’s legendary warrior-king, Sengge Namgyal.
Over centuries, this palace transformed into a powerful Drukpa lineage monastery, guarding sacred statues, ancient relics and stories that were never written down, only spoken, remembered and passed on. In this video, monks of Hanle reveal little-known oral histories of royal battles, divine signs and the stupa built in memory of the king himself.
From a thunderbolt believed to have saved the monastery from destruction, to memorials that still echo Ladakh’s royal past, Hanle Monastery is not just a monument, it is a living chronicle of faith, power and resilience.
