In today’s ride, we’re taking on a 21-mile circular EMTB adventure in the northern fells of the Lake District known locally as 'Back of Skiddaw'. Around 60% of the route is off-road with the rest on very quiet country lanes.
The ride takes you across gravel mining tracks and fell land on Caldbeck Common, then up a gravel track (rocky in a couple of places) to the remote Skiddaw House, before returning via some bumpy single-track fell land across Mungrisedale Common down to Mosedale. It’s a lovely route overall, with the only challenging section being the bumpy stretch from Skiddaw House to Mosedale—which I’ll admit I found a bit taxing!
This one’s best enjoyed in dry weather, as the fell land can get boggy after rain. It’s aimed at adventurous senior or novice riders who want to push themselves a little, while still enjoying a mostly steady and scenic ride.
The number of senior e-bike riders appears to be rapidly increasing and I'm hoping these routes will be useful to those visiting Cumbria and the Lake District and maybe even the local residents, like ourselves.
