In this video I demonstrate a very simple, quick to tie Nymph pattern that is suggestive of many aquatic insects and crustaceans. Its found on page 112 in one of the books I have in my limited fly tying library, "The Fly Tying Bible" by Peter Gathercole.
The materials used can be universally varied to either target the triggers of the fish ie a specific colour combination you know to work at a given fishery or to imitate more closely a specific food item. Its a great fly for beginners and a box can be made up in record time.
This fly is primarily a point fly, designed to get down deep extremely quickly. It can be used on stillwaters where it would be put on the point of a team of nymphs, buzzers being on the droppers as a suggestion. Its a good setup to start with at any lake where the methods or flies are unknown to you.
On the rivers it should be fished under an indicator, most probably singly and cast upstream to allow it to sink down to the fish. Or it can be fished Euro or Czech style on a short line. If the shell backed Czech Nymphs are a little time consuming, or for some tyers, a little difficult, try this pattern first.
