Oftentimes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, when we think of playing guard, we automatically picture fighting off our back. While being offensive from the supine position is what made Jiu Jitsu unique compared to other grappling arts, the downside is that many practitioners have overlooked one of the strongest offensive and defensive guard positions — the seated guard.
The seated guard is one of the most underutilized and underdeveloped parts of most grapplers’ guard games. Even when players start seated, they often concede straight to their back once they establish a connection to the passer. In reality, the seated guard is a powerful position to initiate offense. Beginning lower than the passer opens opportunities to connect to the legs for sweeps, tackles, and transitions once the top player engages.
In the first part of this series, we cover the fundamentals of wrestle-ups from the seated guard, why they are so effective in both gi and no-gi, and which options are the easiest and most reliable to start building your BJJ guard game around.
