It's time for....... ROLL PLAY! 🎲
Masked or flat facial expression (also referred to as hypomimia) in Parkinson's Disease can have a devastating impact on communication and social relationships.
The lack of dopamine production in the brain tricks the PwP into thinking that the movements they make are sufficiently big.. when this is actually not the case. People with Parkinson's FEEL like they are smiling widely 😄, widening their eyes 😲 or furrowing their brow 😣 for example to express different emotions, when in fact this is not the case.
People can start to interpret this lack of expression as disinterest and thus start disengaging with that person. This is a vicious cycle that can lead to breakdown in relationships and the PwP withdrawing from communication interactions and social situations. Lack of social connections can lead to anxiety and depression.
So how do we fight against facial masking? By EXERCISING the face muscles and practicing BIGGER more EXAGGERATED facial movements and tone in different emotional contexts.
This is a fun game that requires only one dice and a mirror. It can be played alone or with a partner.
