OSCAR WILDE ‘A Preface to Dorian Gray’ (1891) context & reading | 19th Century English Literature

A reading of Oscar Wilde’s ‘Preface’ to The Picture of Dorian Gray (published March 1891) prefaced with some historical context: including a scathingly critical review of the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray from the Daily Chronicle (30 June 1890) and Oscar Wilde’s letter to J. S. Little, the Executive Secretary of the Society of Authors, in which he chastised his critics as ignorant and prurient. Oscar Wilde’s ‘A Preface to Dorian Gray’, published in The Fortnightly Review, attacked his antagonists whilst outlining his conception of art, such as “There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book” and “All art is quite useless”.
