The devastating 2009 bushfires in Victoria known as Black Saturday resulted in numerous class action proceedings before the Supreme Court of Victoria.
The largest of these, the Kilmore East-Kinglake proceedings, involving approximately 10,000 registered group members, started in March 2013. To accommodate the heating the Supreme Court worked with the Department of Justice to project-manage the design and build of a courtroom in the extraordinarily short time frame of just four months, conscious of the need to provide all parties with their day in court, without delay.
All opening addresses were web streamed live and filmed by media. The trial was also privately web streamed to party members, allowing them to watch proceedings privately from their own homes. The Supreme Court used the latest in technology and eFiling during the trial. There were more than than 18,000 pages of transcript, more than 10,000 exhibits, and 100,000 megabytes of material.
