The UK’s First Fully Underground Marathon: A Bonkers Triumph Beneath Blighty
Ladies and gentlemen hold onto your head torches because Britain has officially gone barking mad. No, it’s not another high-speed train project that doesn’t go anywhere, nor is it a £5,000 designer toaster that burns your bread with “artisanal flair.” It’s a marathon. Underground.
Yes, you heard right a full 26.2 miles beneath the earth’s surface. Forget rolling countryside, majestic bridges, or cheering crowds; this is a sweaty, claustrophobic romp through tunnels, dank air, and the ever-present threat of bumping your head on a low-hanging pipe. Because why run above ground like a normal person when you can channel your inner mole?
The event, held in some former industrial labyrinth (which probably has more history than half the museums in London), saw participants dodging puddles, dim lighting, and the odd rat—all while maintaining that British spirit of polite endurance. “Oh no, after you!” as they squeeze through a narrow passageway.
The route is something out of an Indiana Jones movie, minus the rolling boulders and exotic locations. Instead, you had flickering fluorescent lights and the kind of atmosphere that would make a coal miner nostalgic. It’s a stark reminder that we Brits, in our infinite wisdom, will take the most straightforward concept—running in a straight line—and think, “How can we make this absolutely ridiculous?”
But credit where it’s due: it’s a cracking idea. It’s unique, it’s challenging, and it has a certain mad charm to it. Plus, no chance of sunburn. I only hope they hand out medals shaped like spades or perhaps a pint of stout to wash away the dust at the finish line.
