Recorded at the Tech Meets Nature Showcase which ran during National Science Week 2025 thanks to the support of Inspiring Australia – An Australian Government Initiative.
Dr Tamielle Brunt is a dedicated ecologist and researched platypus populations within southeast Queensland for her PhD through the University of Queensland. Her research has provided crucial data on this elusive mammal to help influence conservation efforts to protect this species. In addition to her research, Tamielle is the PlatypusWatch project officer for the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland. In this role, she actively promotes, implements and manages various initiatives aimed at conserving platypus populations and freshwater ecosystems across Queensland.
One of the projects she implements is an ongoing collaboration with local councils, which is in its tenth year and utilises eDNA to monitor the status of platypus distribution and populations in Queensland. Tamielle will speak about this project's findings and its application for management of platypuses in south-east Qld.
