Camping at Lily Bay State Park, Moosehead Lake, ME

Lily Bay State Park, some nine miles north of Greenville, Maine, on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake, makes a great base for enjoying the lake and surrounding wilderness of north-central Maine. The park offers drive-in tent and RV sites (no electric or water hookups) around Dunn Point and Rowell Cove, as well as two separate launch ramps with docks where trailer-boaters can tie up during their stay. Campers with boats can dock their vessels at no additional charge! Other amenities include a swimming beach, a playground with volleyball net, and a two-mile shoreline walking trail, and firewood for sale at the office. There is also a shower and dish-washing facility with hot water available.

Many Lily Bay campers also bring kayaks and canoes (rentals are available in Greenville), as the surrounding waters comprise a paddler’s paradise. Several public islands close to the park make ideal rest-stops for picnics and swimming, while myriad shallow coves provide excellent protection on windy days. Loons, mergansers, and blue heron abound in this area, and if you’re lucky, you may even spy a moose or bald eagle!

If you like to fish, you'll find everything from chub to salmon and trout in the lake waters. Specialized gear is needed to reach the last two species during the summer, but warm-water fish such as smallmouth bass and perch can be taken on everything from spoons and soft-plastics to live worms fished under bobbers.

Nature lovers can expect to see and hear all sorts of wild animals, including loons, pileated woodpeckers, bald eagles, deer, red squirrels, and the iconic moose. Just be sure to protect your food from thieving raccoons!

The Moosehead area also features several mountains that make for easy day hikes. Among them are Big Moose Mountain, Borestone Mountain, Mount Kino and Spencer Mountain.
