In the early 1970s, GM V8 engines didn’t lose power by accident. They were engineered to give it up quietly. Under pressure from emissions laws and the FTP-75 test, GM redesigned its exhaust systems to prioritize heat retention over airflow. Log-style manifolds, heat riser valves, and enlarged exhaust crossovers helped engines pass cold start emissions, but continued restricting flow long after warmup. The result was smoother idle, safer compliance, and legally protected drivability at the cost of throttle response and high-rpm power. The engines weren’t weak. They were deliberately restrained, and only street-level fixes revealed what had been locked away.
