The SD40-2 used to be the king of the mainline, and could be found on any type of freight train in North America. These days, they are still active on a few class ones, but relegated to locals and transfer service. BNSF railway still has a large fleet of 40s in active service, but only a handful in Burlington Northern green.
In this video, we'll chase a pair or matched BN green SD40-2s on the East Local, which is based out of Willmar, MN. Starting off in Grove City under foggy conditions, the first train we see is the LINNTW with a pair of GEs for power. Shortly after, the green duo comes racing down the main, and its fouled Prime 920 blasting away. After shooting it at Grove City, we'll see it again at places such as Dassel, Darwin, Cokato, and Howard Lake. After meeting oil loads at Howard lake, they switch from the 1687, and the 1940 leads back to Wilmar. These unit used to dominate the mainline, but can still be found working nearly 50 years after first hitting the rails.
