Henryk Pachulski was a pianist, composer and teacher. He was born on 16th October 1859 in Poland, but spent most of his life in Russia.
Of noble birth, he was the son of a surveyor and forester. He studied at the Warsaw Institute of Music, and subsequently at the Moscow Conservatory from 1880 under Michałowski, Rubinstein, and Arensky. Rubinstein was a prolific composer and Arensky was a professor of harmony and counterpoint at the Conservatory.
Pachulski, however, was overshadowed as he was a contemporary to the more well-known names such as Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mahler and Rachmaninov. He became a professor of piano at the Moscow conservatory from 1886 to 1917, he was 27. In his lifetime he lived through World War I and the rule of the Tsars. He never returned to Poland and died in Moscow in 1921, the year before Stalin rose to power and ruled the Soviet Union as a dictator.
