Acrylic Painting Class Lesson #4 Shades of Gray and Seeing Tones part 1

In this lesson I demonstrate painting a scale of grays in acrylic, white to raw umber (because I don't have any black acrylic), the tones. This is an important practice to help you see the light and dark tones, which will help you to see the tones of colors, which I will demonstrate in Part 2

I highly encourage you to paint this scale, and more than once, because this practice is much like playing scales in music. In music you are hearing the tones, in painting you are seeing the tones, and seeing is everything in what I teach.

I need this practice because, even though I've been painting in oils for over 40 years, I haven't painted in acrylics very much and the 2 mediums are very different.

There is also a video for oils. In part 2 I will explore the tones of colors for you. And in part 3 I will demonstrate a still life painting in just shades of gray.

Painting is a Visual Language. When learning a verbal language you want to speak it isn't necessary to conjugate verbs right away. When learning a visual language it isn't necessary to learn color theory right away. I propose that you start right away by learning to see so you can express what you choose for others to see in your art. I intend to share a lot about the Visual Language in this series and how to express it in your art in the way YOU choose to express it.
