Labubu, the wide-eyed toy with rabbit ears and a naughty smile, is going viral around the world. It was first created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung for a children’s book called “The Monsters.” Inspired by fairy tales from Europe, Labubu was a fun, forest character meant for kids.
Later, Labubu became famous as a collectible toy through Pop Mart, a Chinese company known for “blind box” toys where buyers don’t know which design they will get. Soon, everyone from Hollywood stars like Rihanna to K-pop singers like Lisa was seen carrying Labubu dolls. People waited in long lines at shops, shared unboxing videos on TikTok, and paid lakhs of rupees for rare Labubu toys.
By 2025, Labubu became both popular and controversial. Some people started calling it creepy and linked it to scary demons, with viral videos saying it had “black magic powers.” Some countries like Iraq even banned the doll, and Russia raised concerns about it scaring children.
However, fact-checkers confirmed that Labubu is just a toy from a storybook, with no connection to demons or black magic. Its creator and fans call it a cute and funny toy, celebrating its weird but lovable look.
Labubu shows how quickly social media can make anything famous or scary. For many fans, Labubu is simply fun — a little cute, a little creepy, but not dangerous.
