Galiardo by William Byrde (1543-1623)
Parthenia 7
At 16 measures this is the shortest Galiardo ever!
The characteristic rhythm of long note followed b 2 shorter permeates gives a sense of energy.
In longer Galliardos requiring a slower tempo the sense is of spaciousness.
This and the Pavana "The Earle of Salisbury" are printed next to each other in Parthenia the first published book of Virginals music.
When Danced the slow Pavana was usually followed by the Galiardo.
A Pavana has 3 sections (strains) and each is repeated. The tempo is usually slower than the Galiardo which follows. Here they are: in a nutshell!
