This is the 1st main video posting of my Hornby R1041 Live Steam 'Mallard' No. 4468 (3rd Steaming). It is being controlled using a 'Live Drive Controller' connected between the Hornby Controller and the Hornby R8211 Rolling Road. My 'Live Drive Controller' is a Deluxe Kit, purchased through the Members Shop of 'OO' Live Steam Club, which is an efficient and versatile alternative to Hornby's Controller. Either Controller can be used when connected together, which is a nice choice to have, without the need to change any wiring connections.

Controlling Hornby Live Steam Locomotives does take some getting used to. It is a lot of fun learning the skills required, on the Rolling Road, not on a Track Layout. The Red & Green LED's in the Cab, are important indicators as is the Steam Whistle when changing the Locomotive direction of travel. A complete understanding of each of the indicators are essential to control these Locomotives effectively. It is also helpful to count the number of Activations made (in 5's), on the Hornby Controller Speed Regulator Lever, to have an idea where the Steam Valve Regulator is. This allows a more informed decision, how to achieve the next required Steam-State, efficiently. It is only when you have mastered the Hornby Live Steam Controller that you can fully appreciate the benefits that the Live Drive Controller provides.

For added interest, I have removed the Mallard's bodywork, so that you can see the amazing Steam Engineering that goes into these models. A fully working Steam Engine crammed inside an 'OO' Gauge sized Locomotive. How clever is that? Shame these models were discontinued by Hornby around 2008-9. Still, All credit to Hornby for their commitment, producing such an amazing range of Live Steam Models which have become quite Collectable now.
