Zanzibar was meant to be a pause — paradise while I waited out forecasted protests on the mainland.
After leaving Mafia Island, I crossed over to Zanzibar and explored Stone Town, Paje, Michamvi Kae, and Nungwi, soaking up the island before everything unraveled.
Then the malaria hit.
What followed was the worst sickness of my life —
three days of battling a manic fever, collapsing hard enough to land me in the emergency room, followed by another three days in hospital, getting completely smashed by it.
