Australia has debated high-speed rail for decades, spending billions on studies without laying a single kilometre of track. But momentum is finally building around a concrete proposal: a 194-kilometre high-speed line between Sydney and Newcastle, planned as the first stage of a future Melbourne–Brisbane network. In this video, we explain why this corridor was chosen, how demand compares with other major routes, and why existing rail and road infrastructure are rapidly reaching their limits.
We break down what would actually be built, from tunnels and viaducts to stations, trains, and system integration, and how journey times could be cut dramatically, with Newcastle–Sydney reduced to around one hour. Using international benchmarks from projects like HS2 and Sydney Metro, we also present our own cost estimate, suggesting that this first stage alone could reach around 60 billion Australian dollars, even before land acquisition.
