Throughout the last two decades research on memory has played an important part in neuroscientific investigations of learning as well as disorder. Meanwhile writers and artists have long contended that memory and imagination are part and parcel of the same fabric. How has neuroscience been informed by artists' understanding and vice versa? Do specific spatial, verbal or musical effects structure the workings of memory? Professor of psychiatry, Michael Kopelman works on memory disorders, from dementia to amnesia to confabulation. Steven Rose has written widely on the neuroscience of memory. Charismatic tenor, Ian Bostridge approaches remembering through music, lyric and voice, while Director Simon McBurney of Complicite Theatre considers the elements of their production of Mnemonic. Together with chair, Lisa Appignanesi, author of The Memory Man, they tease out the workings of memory.
