In my experience, the typical cholesterol panel (Cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and Triglycerides) is insufficient to determine whether or not a person should take a statin (cholesterol-lowering) medication. Lipid metabolism and metabolic health are much more complex and require a much more detailed analysis than what is often provided in typical primary care settings.
