In the sixth of the RAF Centre for Air Power Studies (RAF CAPS) rarely-seen before historic ‘leadership’ themed videos, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Keith Williamson GCB AFC is interviewed by Wing Commander (Later Air Commodore) S N Bostock at the RAF Staff College, Bracknell, in March 1988.

Sir Keith Williamson joined the RAF in 1945 on the Aircraft Apprentice Scheme as a radio fitter with the ambition of one day becoming a pilot. His ambition was soon realised as he was selected for a cadetship at RAF College Cranwell before being commissioned in December of 1950.

His early career saw him flying Vampires in Germany before joining 77 Squadron RAAF flying Meteors in a ground attack role during the Korean War. His later command tours included OC 23 Sqn, Station Commander of RAF Gütersloh and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Strike Command (during the Falklands Conflict of 1982).

In his final appointment as Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) he oversaw Operation BUSHEL, the emergency humanitarian airlift operation in the wake of the severe famine and drought experienced in Ethiopia in the mid-80s. As CAS, he was also instrumental in the development of the European Fighter programme which we know today as the Typhoon.

Sir Keith Williamson gives a full and frank account of his experiences during his long career, which sometimes put him at odds with his peers, and adds some interesting insights to the events described in the interview.
