We boarded the Shinkansen from Nagoya to Osaka, armed the way you should be, onigiri, sushi, cold cans of beer, lemon sours, and a cheap bottle of red rattling around under the seat. The train moved like a dream, slicing through the countryside, leaving the world blurred at the edges.

In Osaka, we checked into a £38-a-night business hotel. A small, square room built for working men and travelers just passing through. It had everything you needed, and nothing you didn’t.

Then the night swallowed us whole. Izakayas packed tight, smoke curling into the street, laughter spilling through the doors. We drank, we ate, we wandered. Somewhere along the way, we found a karaoke bar and strangers became old mates, singing off-key into the early hours, bound together by bad pop songs and too many highballs.

Morning came hard and fast. Strong coffee from a small shop kept us upright as we boarded the train again, this time headed for Universal Studios Japan. It was fun, loud, pure chaos, the kind of day you muscle through with a grin, even when half the time you’re shoulder to shoulder in the crowd.

Four days later, Tokyo Disneyland and everything slowed down. Calmer, easier, almost serene in that strange Japanese way of making the impossible seem effortless. We spent the day riding everything, eating beef and rice under blue skies, and were genuinely surprised by how affordable it all was.

Japan always saves its best surprises for the ones who stick around long enough to see them.
