Islamic State Fighters Escape Syria Prison As Guards Abandon Facility

Around 200 low-level Islamic State fighters escaped from Syria’s Shaddadi prison on Monday after guards from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces abandoned the facility, according to a U.S. official.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said Syrian government forces later recaptured many of the escapees. The official added that around 600 foreign Islamic State fighters had been transferred out of Shaddadi before January 19 and remain in detention at other locations.

Responsibility for the prison break has become a point of contention, with both the Syrian government and the SDF trading blame and accusing each other of facilitating the escape. Damascus has since said it has taken control of the prison.

The incident comes despite a ceasefire agreement reached between the two sides on Sunday, with tensions continuing in the days that followed. There was no immediate response from the SDF regarding the allegations.
