Allen Tanner was born on December 1, 1925 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After leaving school at a young age, he went to work at sea. Too young to join the Canadian Merchant Navy, he served on a Norwegian ship, whose crew shortage made him a welcome addition. Mr. Tanner worked on board a freighter, but decided to transfer to tankers during the Second World War due to the higher pay that they offered. In this clip, Mr. Tanner talks about how Merchant Navy convoys were structured and defended during the conflict.
