📚 In Lecture 2 of the Stiffness Method series, we derive the stiffness matrix for a truss (bar) element in its local coordinates and implement it in MATLAB and Octave.
In this lecture, we cover:
✅ Assumptions for a truss/bar element (axial forces only, pin connections, linear elasticity)
✅ Degrees of freedom (DOFs) and their role in the stiffness method
✅ Deriving stiffness influence coefficients step by step
✅ Assembling the 2×2 stiffness matrix for a bar element
✅ Implementing the formulation in MATLAB/Octave code
This lecture builds directly on the introduction and sets the foundation for applying the stiffness method to larger truss, beam, and frame structures.
👷♀️ Delivered by Dr Margi Vilnay – Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering, Chartered Engineer, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
