📚 In Lecture 4 of the Stiffness Method series, we show how to assemble local element stiffness matrices into the global stiffness matrix for a complete structure, step by step.
In this lecture, we cover:
✅ Defining nodes, elements, and degrees of freedom (DOFs)
✅ Writing local stiffness matrices for beam elements
✅ Relating DOFs to the full system stiffness matrix
✅ Assembling multiple elements into a global matrix
✅ Step-by-step calculation examples
✅ Coding the global stiffness matrix assembly in MATLAB and GNU Octave
This lecture builds on the bar and beam element stiffness derivations (Lectures 2 and 3) and shows how to combine them into a full structural system.
This is only for elements where the local and global coordinate systems coincide. We will incorporate rotation in the next lecture.
👷♀️ Delivered by Dr Margi Vilnay – Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering, Chartered Engineer, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
