📚 In Part 1 of Lecture 8 of the Stiffness Method series, we complete the analysis process by determining support reactions and internal member forces in a truss using results from the displacement solution.
Building directly on Lecture 7 (Solving the Stiffness Equation & Displacements), this lecture explains how to interpret the stiffness method results and extract meaningful engineering quantities.
In this lecture, we will cover:
✅ Partitioning the global stiffness equation
✅ Deriving and interpreting the reaction equation
✅ Recovering reactions from the global system
✅ Calculating internal member forces in trusses using local ↔ global transformations
✅ Worked example: 3-bar truss
✅ MATLAB / Octave coding of the truss stiffness method solution
This session brings together everything from the stiffness formulation to practical application — providing a complete understanding of how structures resist loads through internal forces and support reactions.
👷♀️ Delivered by Dr Margi Vilnay – Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering, Chartered Engineer, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
