Fog in watercolor looks complicated… but it’s actually ONE simple decision.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to paint a soft misty forest using wet-on-wet, light values, and soft edges.
You’ll learn:
✅ how to keep fog soft (no harsh edges)
✅ how to build depth using values (light → medium → dark)
✅ how to create trees that “disappear” into mist
✅ how to get a realistic atmospheric look with just TWO colors
🎨 Colors used:
Payne’s Gray (QoR)
Indigo / India Blue (Daniel Smith)
(But any blue works — this lesson is about VALUES.)

0:06 Wet-on-wet setup + minimal sketch
0:20 First fog layer (very diluted paint)
1:31 Colors used (but values matter most)
2:02 Second layer: distant tree shapes (triangles)
3:31 Let it dry naturally (don’t stop blending)
3:42 Distant trees that “disappear” into fog
5:27 Creating fog banks (soft transitions)
6:20 Keep values LIGHT (avoid killing fog)
6:28 Adding deeper color (still soft edges)
7:02 Planning foreground trees (closer + darker)
8:09 Tree details with a small brush (size 2)
9:56 Foreground starts (slightly more definition)
11:58 Darkest trees (variation + natural shapes)
13:42 Soft valley + hill illusion (depth)
16:25 Key rules: values + detail = distance
18:18 Final softening + finishing touches
