Running away from the setting sun, the race is on to reach the lookout point before it sets! This southern part of the loop passes through a great deal of farmland and forestry, but there are some highlights. Around halfway there is the memorial to the Tangiwai rail disaster, worth a stop if you are visiting, with a nice area by the river for contemplation. Once reaching the Desert Road the mountain vista dominates - though is interrupted somewhat by the high voltage power lines, until you reach the small rise with the lookout, allowing a clearer view of the snowy peaks.
