Hōjō Masako was a political figure in Japan during the late Heian period and the early Kamakura shogunate She was the wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate. After Yoritomo's death, she became a nun and emerged as the dominant figure in the shogunate.
