Hello friends. This is the third of four videos in which we take a walk along the Former Lehigh and New Englands Lehigh Gap Palmerton spur.
The town of Palmerton had once had a huge zinc smelting industry. The zinc ore was mined in Franklin, New Jersey and transported by rail to Palmerton PA for processing. Now I believe that the Central Railroad of New Jersey transported the lion share of this ore however I am also learning that the LNE played a role in this industry as well. They were interchanging with the Chestnut Ridge Railway, which was a small line running from Palmerton to Kunkletown PA. The LNE interchanged commodities such as bricks, sand for Bethlehem Steel, and zinc products. The LNE was the second major Northeast railroad to be abandonment. This happened on Halloween 1961. The LNE trackage would be taken over by CNJ in locations however things were not good for the CNJ and this did not last to long unfortunately. Thank you for watching. 5/17/25
