The second part of the frost troll attack on High Hrothgar! 10 trolls failed last time, so we're pumping up the numbers.
This episode was extremely difficult to record for many reasons. In most rounds with more than 10 trolls, the Greybeards kept falling off the cliffs, or just glitching out and not attacking anymore. The trolls constantly pushed me around, making it almost impossible to get good camera angles.
The mod TrueHUD, which shows the healthbars, can't be used in combination with TFC, so walking around was the only way to do this. Using the Floating Healthbars was not an alternative since it has a much greater impact on the framerate and because you can't show the bars for only selected NPCs.
To increase the visibility, I gradually lowered the amount of healthbars as I added more trolls.
Another huge problem was that ragdolled actors don't get tracked correctly by NPCs. The Greybeards kept missing the trolls that were currently knocked down or frozen, multiple times in a row, which looks absolutely ridiculous. The trolls' combat idle animations also didn't help, as they just waste time and allow for easy kills.
Initially, in the last episode, I was going to show every round until the trolls consistently got the upper hand. However, as the Greybeards still completely dominated against 10 trolls, I figured that's not going to work.
Interestingly, at around 20 trolls, adding more doesn't even make much of a difference. I tried 20, 25, 30, and 35 trolls, dozens of times each, and the results were indistinguishable. I further confirmed this by using 100 trolls.
The only way for the trolls to reach the Greybeards is to run up the mountain and the stairs, which makes them a perfect target for the Greybeards' shouts. All of them create a projectile with an area of effect that passes right through an opponent, as well as either inflicting guaranteed stagger on the trolls (fire breath, frost breath), freezing them (ice form), or ragdolling them (unrelenting force). This makes for excellent stopping power against any number of trolls.
Only a limited amout of them can be close to the Greybeards at any given time. Once those are defeated, the Greybeards' quick shout cooldown allows them to clear the next rows of trolls, and they can repeat this pattern over and over. Only if a few lucky trolls manage to break through the lines, they can distract the Greybeards from the bigger hordes, and sometimes get a victory. The round with the 35 shows this example.
If the Greybeards focus on fire breath, the trolls don't stand a chance, regardless of the amount. The same goes for unrelenting force, which can be lethal through fall damage, and easily knock the trolls off the cliff.
If they use ice form or frost breath, the battle is more balanced.
I spent over 8 hours testing and recording all of this, plus more time for cutscenes.
