Today we set out to catch both the final Railway Touring Company Royal Duchy excursion to Par this year and some footage from the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
We begin at Taunton to see the Royal Duchy, and due to a shortage of mainline operational steam locomotives, this final run would be diesel throughout and so today began with West Coast Railways Class 33s 33025 + 33207 'Jim Martin' working top and tail with 47812 on the tour, pausing briefly before continuing to Par.
After the Cromptons leave Taunton we hit the road and head across Exmoor to the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway for their special Railway 200 Autumn ‘Narrow gauge, the wider story’ Gala.
This event had a selection of guest and home fleet narrow gauge locomotives in action working services between Woody Bay and Killington Lane, with a highlight of the day being the lunchtime locomotive cavalcade to celebrate Railway 200 recognising the unique role that narrow-gauge engines have played in two centuries of railway history around the globe, uniting nations, manufacturers and engine types illustrating their unique stories and contributions. There were lots of other things to see including classic cars, traction engines, historic reenactors, models and more.
Today’s sequence finishes at the Old Station Inn at Blackmoor Gate, Kentisbury. Formerly part of the old Narrow Gauge Line, the pub is now owned by the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway and though there is currently no track here, there are long term ambitions to one day relink and run the line back through this site, the venue will eventually provide station facilities for the extended Lynton & Barnstaple Railway whilst continuing its operations as a pub and restaurant. Like many of the exciting restoration projects we have already seen this year, you never know what could be achieved during the next few decades!
