Join Dr. Sara Perry as she delivers an insightful Keynote Address on Day 3 of the Speaking Archaeologically ECR Conference. Based on the conference’s interest in digital archaeology’s relationship to meaning-making and collaboration at archaeological sites, this talk will reflect on the paradoxes we’ve experienced in recent digital participatory work that my teams have been doing at different international sites. Herein, the idea of public participation is embraced, and digital practices and technologies are seen as a means to facilitate it, but when results begin to infringe too much on normative methods and extant power structures, support for participation dwindles and becomes notably undemocratic. Crucially, the digital plays an important role in quashing participatory goals. I’ll review skills and strategies we’re exploring in the face of these tensions, some of which themselves may seem paradoxical.
