I've adopted the concept of 'dancing the whole dance' from Brooke Friendly -- and Kyriarky was the first dance I wrote that exploits the modern contra swing rule to shift dancers naturally from one role to the other each time through. For another dance that does the same thing, written at about the same time, check out Sam Tetley Smith's Psyche and Psychopomp.
I describe the formation as 'arky' because it's a term that was used in the 1970s and '80s to describe figures in which oneself and one's partner are temporarily in each other's places and potentially doing some unfamiliar things. The term might not gain traction, but dancing both roles is so common now that I doubt many people in this video were caught by surprise when they switched!
The title of the dance is a play on 'arky' and 'kyriarchy' -- I hope for obvious reasons.
