Denmark has called for a “calm process” in discussions with the United States over Greenland, as tensions rise following remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said negotiations should move away from dramatic public statements and focus on structured, high-level talks involving Denmark, the United States, and NATO. Rasmussen confirmed that Danish and U.S. officials met in Washington to outline a roadmap for future dialogue but stressed that details of upcoming meetings will not be made public.
The comments come after Trump claimed the U.S. had secured permanent access to Greenland, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the need to strengthen security in the Arctic amid growing concerns over Russia and China.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is also visiting Greenland to hold talks with the island’s leadership as Arctic security remains a key international issue.
